I used to be very unsure about crate training a dog but my opinions have changed. I think that it is perfectly possible to crate train a dog as part of a positive reenforcement training programme.
The reason that I have changed my mind is fairly simple. If you step back and think about it is your dogs natural instinct to find and live in a den. This provides him with a safe haven and a place to call his own.
We don’t have any space in our house for a dog crate, Fig has a basket instead which is under a table. This provides the same type of environement.
Dog crates can be very useful as long as they are used in the right way, here are some guidelines on how the dog crate should be used:
yeah you’re right. I had the same feelings at first with crate training. I was shocked to saw a crate in the home of one of my friends when I visited him 5 or 6 years ago. He had just got himself a dog (some sort of Bull Terrier) and I payed him a visit to see the new puppy.
I saw the crate. And I told him I didn’t feel right about that.
But I was wrong. When done right you can easily use a crate very well. My friend’s dog is now 5 or 6 years old and he really loves that crate. It is his own little home! It’s never shut anymore. It the dog’s own private space where he can rest. He loves it now.
Yay it’s always good to find likeminded people : )
